Met Gala 2023 red carpet: Olivia Wilde wears SAME DRESS as Vogue China editor Margaret Zhang

Olivia Wilde suffered from a fashion disaster at the 2023 Met Gala – when she showed up to the red carpet wearing the same dress as filmmaker and Vogue China editor Margaret Zhang.

The Don’t Worry Darling director, 39, opted for a white, floor-length Chloé gown, which was inspired by a design from the late Karl Lagerfeld and contained a gold, violin-shaped design on the front.

While the House star looked stunning in the number – things quickly turned awkward when it was revealed that Margaret, 29, chose almost the exact same ensemble but in black instead.

People all over social media couldn’t help but make jokes about the sartorial faux pau – while others wondered how it even happened.

‘The DRAMA,’ wrote one person, while another added, ‘They’re so brave for not going home immediately.’

‘FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT,’ read a third tweet. A fourth said: ‘Omg RIP to whoever is getting fired for this.’

‘Well that’s embarrassing,’ someone else tweeted.

‘I’d be pissed,’ a different user wrote. Another agreed, ‘They should hide away for the next year.’

Someone else asked, ‘How is this even possible?’

‘I thought all the outfits were approved beforehand? Someone’s in trouble,’ read another tweet.

Other social media users argued over who wore it better, while some slammed the dress – branding it as ‘ugly’ and comparing the embellishment on the front to a menstrual pad.

The chances of two stars wearing the same gown seems slim on first glance, however, because the theme of this year’s Met Gala is all about celebrating Karl, it’s not that shocking that both Olivia and Margaret wore ensembles that were helmed from his creations.

Olivia’s dress was created by Chloé designer Gabriela Hearst, and she told Vogue that it was based on a gown Karl had created in 1983.

‘It’s from Chloé’s spring 1983 collection, which was entirely inspired by music,’ Vogue reported.

‘This particular look referenced a violin crafted by a 17th century Italian luthier named Nicola Amati.’

Gabriela told the outlet, ‘What I loved about the original design was the musical inspiration of it, and the surrealistic touch on it.

‘There was something quite timeless that we could bring back to the Met Gala in 2023.’

It is not known who made Margaret’s version of the gown. Aside from being different colors, the two numbers also contained varying bottoms – Olivia’s was thinner, while Margaret’s dress got wider near the ends and contained a flowing tail with gold embroidery.
