Joe Biden hits back at Donald Trump’s Capitol riot claims during CNN town hall

President Joe Biden hit back at his predecessor Donald Trump after he suggested he would pardon those who took part in the January 6 riot and adding that they ‘were not good people.’

Biden tweeted shortly after Trump said as such at his CNN Town Hall on Wednesday night, comparing them to those who caused havoc in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017.

The president wrote: ‘There were not fine people on both sides of Charlottesville. The January 6th rioters were not good people. End of story.’

Trump initially lashed out at his vice-president Mike Pence, slamming him for refusing to back his bogus claims the 2020 election was fixed.

The presidential candidate rebuffed a question from CNN moderator Kaitlin Collins over whether he say sorry to his former deputy and said he was considering pardoning some January 6 rioters.

‘No, he did something wrong. He should’ve put the votes back to the state legislatures and I think we would’ve had a different outcome,’ the former president told CNN.

‘I am inclined to pardon many of them. I can’t say for every single one because a couple of them probably they got out of control,’ Trump said.

The prime-time forum in New Hampshire was already expected to be noteworthy when it was publicly announced last week.

Trump and CNN have long sparred with each other, with the former president often branding the network ‘fake news’.

But jurors in New York found Trump had sexually abused and defamed advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, though they rejected her claim that he raped her.

The jury awarded her $5 million in damages. Trump called the verdict ‘a disgrace’ and he vowed to appeal.

A small group of anti-Trump protesters gathered Wednesday evening outside the site where the town hall was being held at Saint Anselm College in Manchester.

Their signs included messages like ‘Nobody is above the law’ and ‘Elections not insurrection.’

The appearance will also serve as yet another contrast with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is seen as a top rival to Trump for the GOP presidential nomination.

The 44-year-old is expected to launch his campaign in the coming weeks, but he has been under constant attack from Trump for dodging the press.
