America’s safest suburbs are in Virginia, Maryland and Indiana

Who said the suburbs were boring? Well, thankfully, the crime stats. 

The safest suburbs across the country have now been revealed in data analyzing levels of violent crime, property crime, vehicular mortality and drug poisoning mortality in 370 suburbs of the 100 largest cities.

Great Falls, Virginia was crowned the nation’s safest suburb by SmartAsset’s analysis

This affluent suburb of Washington DC has the second-lowest violent crime rate in the country, at just 6.81 per 100,000 residents, as well as the eighth-lowest vehicle mortality rate with 4.35 traffic deaths per 100,000 residents.

It boasts great access to the stunning natural beauty of Great Falls National Park as well as the rich culture of metropolitan Washington DC just 18 miles away.

 The suburb contains several highly rated schools, including Langley High School and a public library.

According to the US census Great Falls’ county, Fairfax County, also has the highest median household income at $250,000.

Just pipped to the post and coming in second place is Carmel, a suburb of Indianapolis. 

Nearby suburbs Fishers and Noblesville rank fourth and fifth respectively. 

These suburbs offer an attractive blend of being highly safe as well as scoring well for affordability. 

Housing costs in each of the four Indiana suburbs that made the list are less than 17.5% of the median household income.

In third place for safety is the suburb of Bethesda in Maryland. 

Bethesda has a low drug poisoning mortality rate of just 12.4 people per 100,000 residents, but its property crime is significantly higher than others that made the shortlist.

The Washington DC suburb also has the 10th-lowest percentage of people who drink excessively (14.57 percent) and one of the lowest vehicle mortality rates across our study, 4.98 deaths per 100,000 residents. That ranks 27th lowest out of all 370 suburbs analyzed.

Suburbs of Boston have the lowest rates of deadly car accidents. Lexington, Somerville and Chelsea, in Massachusetts placed first, second and fourth for the least number of road suburban deaths, with less than four car accident deaths per 100,000 residents. 

To compile their list of the safest suburbs, SmartAsset compared data for 370 places that are within 15 to 45 minutes of the 100 largest U.S. cities by car, that have at least 5,000 residents
