The U.S. Navy heard the likely sound of the Titanic tourist submersible imploding shortly after it was reported missing, according to a report – and yet still a massive rescue effort was launched, and the families kept on edge.
The Navy began listening in the area where the Titan sub was last in contact with the mothership shortly after it was reported missing.Â
‘The U.S. Navy conducted an analysis of acoustic data and detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost,’ a senior U.S. Navy official told The Wall Street Journal in a statement.Â
‘While not definitive, this information was immediately shared with the Incident Commander to assist with the ongoing search and rescue mission.’Â
The sound was detected in an area where the debris from the sub was located on Thursday.Â
The submersible, Titon, is pictured descending. It is the only five person sub capable of reaching Titanic
The U.S. Navy would not reveal the name of the secret listening system, citing national security concerns.Â
