Venus Williams screams in pain as she slips and injures her knee at Wimbledon

Venus Williams was left screaming in pain and clutching her knee after slipping on the grass just three games into her Wimbledon return on Monday afternoon.

The 43-year-old American, who was returning for her 24th singles appearance at The Championships, is facing difficult opposition in Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

But things turned ugly with the score 2-1 in the first set as Williams came into the net to play a volley, slipping on the grass and extending her already-strapped up knee.

There were audible gasps from around the crowd on Centre Court as five-time Wimbledon champion Williams screamed in pain, before being immediately helped by the umpire and medical staff.

After a few minutes, she was able to stand under her own power and called for a trainer to attend to her at courtside.
