US Open: Bryson DeChambeau snaps back at heckler timing him over slow play

Bryson DeChambeau got testy with a fan timing him over slow play at the US Open, as footage from the tournament shows the LIV Golf rebel snapping back at the heckler for his antics.

DeChambeau, 29, stepped right onto the tee box during the final round from Los Angeles on Sunday, according to a video shared by Golf Digest on social media, as the interaction unfolded.

‘Are you still timing, cause they just walked off the green buddy,’ the golfer said to the fan, who didn’t show himself in the footage circulating on Twitter.

‘You’re still timing? Okay, thank you.’

DeChambeau, who once won the US Open in 2020 – his only major championship win – eventually finished tied for 20th place at one-over by the end of this year’s edition of the tournament.

‘Here’s Bryson DeChambeau chirping at a guy who was timing him at the US Open over the weekend,’ reporter Christopher Powers wrote as he shared the clip. ‘Sounds like he’s *gulp* in the right?

‘Love the ‘k’ thank you.’ Delivery on point.’

Slow play’s been a hot topic in golf since April, when Brooks Koepka fumed over the Masters’ ‘brutally slow’ pace in a parting shot at Patrick Cantlay. In Georgia, Koepka finished runner-up behind Spain’s Jon Rahm.

DeChambeau – golf’s World No. 89 – didn’t bring his A-Game with him at the LA Country Club, where the US Open was being played this year, as he barely kept up before a final-round 74.

What’s more is that DeChambeau was booed by fans at the PGA Championship in May, where he finished in four place with three shots under par. Last week’s incident isn’t the first time that the golfer’s clashed with spectators on a golf course.

In 2020, DeChambeau confronted a cameraman who he judged was too close to him at the Rocket Mortgage Championship. He was also irritated with a fan who chirped ‘great job Brooksie’ after the 2021 BMW Championship, in reference to his former feud with Koepka.

In 2019, at the Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico, DeChambeau was caught having an angry outburst on camera, when he snatched his putter from his caddie and immediately hammered it into the edge of the putting green.

Having defected to LIV Golf last year for a deal reportedly worth $125million, ‘The Scientist’ – DeChambeau’s nickname due to the American’s analytical and scientific approaches to the sport – is one of the main advocates for reconciliation amid the controversial PGA-LIV Golf merger.

‘I don’t know exactly what [9/11 families] are feeling. I can’t ever know what they feel, but I have a huge amount of respect for their position and what they believe. Nor do I ever want anything like that to ever occur again,’ he told CNN earlier in June.

‘I think as we move forward from that, we’ve got to look towards the pathway to peace, especially in forgiveness, especially if we’re trying to mend the world and make it a better place.’
